July Writing Prompts for KidsThe year is halfway over! Can you believe it?!  Let’s start July with some fantastically, creative writing. I know you all have some great stories in you, so lets get started!

Here are writing prompts for every day in July.  You can use them in order, or pick and choose. Write everyday, once a week or whenever you feel like it.  Whatever you decide, just have a great time.

  1. It’s Canada Day!  When you think of Canada what comes to mind first? Whatever it is, make it the subject of your story about Canada.
  2. It’s time a princess saves a prince. Tell your story. What happens? Is it romantic? Adventurous? Completely crazy?
  3. Your mom’s birthday is coming up and you decide to give her some lotion. Not just any lotion, you’re inventing the scent.  What will you make it smell like? Will she like it?
  4. Happy Fourth of July! Write a story that includes a lot of fireworks, celebrations, barbecues, and maybe create a new tradition or two you’d like to implement.
  5. You are at swimming lessons, and while the teacher is helping another student, you notice something swimming in the deep end, and it doesn’t look human.  What happens next?
  6. You’re laying in the grass at the lake enjoying a lazy day and talking about the cloud shapes with your best friend. Suddenly you see a UFO. What do you do?
  7. Write a song about how awesome your family is. Don’t forget to include all the family members! Pets included.
  8. Have you ever seen a pig fly? I haven’t. Write a story about a flying pig.
  9. While exploring a new park in your neighborhood you find a strange tree. What is strange about it? Does it look weird? Does it grow something weird? Does it have magical powers? Does someone unexpected live in it?
  10. We’re in the future. Kids are now born with all the knowledge they need and no longer need to go to school. What is an ordinary day like in this world.
  11. You have made a huge medical discovery. What is it?
  12. Make a list of the best things to do on the beach. See if your list can hit 50 different things!
  13. Some people think the five points of the star each stand for something different. If you were going to label them symbolically, what would you make them stand for?
  14. Write a poem about cotton candy.
  15. You were chosen as the first person to go down the tallest water slide in the world. Would you do it? Would you be nervous about it or would it be the best day ever?
  16. If you could plan the ultimate birthday party for your best friend and not worry about money. What would you do?
  17. You wake up one day and your teeth are made of marshmallows? How did this happen and what is it like eating, talking and anything else you would normally do?
  18. Invent a new writing code, then write a letter to your father. Give him the code so he can decode it, but make sure he doesn’t share it with anyone else. Now you can write secret messages back and forth between you.
  19. Your family is planning the summer vacation and they decided you get to make the final decision on where to go! You can pick anywhere. Where do you take family vacation?
  20. If you could raise money for any charity, which one would you pick and how would you do it?
  21. What is your favorite TV show? What do you like about it?
  22. If you could only keep one outfit to wear for the rest of your life, which one would it be?
  23. Describe your Sunday morning routine. Do you have one or are you more of a roll with the punches type of person?
  24. You’re in charge of organizing a parade! What is the theme? Are you celebrating anything? Will there be a band? Anything else awesome? You’ll need to design your own float, what will it look like?
  25. What is your favorite thing to do at an amusement park?
  26. What would your cat do if it went to a summer camp for cats? What kind of letter would it write home?
  27. If you built an entire city of Legos which buildings would you add? What kind of architectural style would you use?
  28. A platypus, hedgehog and hamster wake you up in the middle of the night. They whisk you away on an adventure. What happens?
  29. You receive a fortune cookie. The fortune inside has your name on it and gives your friends name saying he’s in trouble. Do you believe it? Do you try to help?
  30. Look at a pair of old shoes. Describe where they’ve been and what they’ve seen.
  31. What is your favorite way to exercise? Tell me about it.
